Commercial Recycling Guide
Your recycling bin comes with a side door so you may easily include the “accepted” material listed below. Please break down boxes because 3-4 boxes can fill the bin if not broken down properly.
All recycling material is CO-MINGLED or mixed together (single-stream recycling) so it does not have to be separated by you. All recycling material is sent to El Paso to Friedman Recycling where it goes through a series of conveyors, filters, shakers, blowers and magnets to separate the materials for market.
“Accepted Material” will change and vary as markets do.
WHAT CAN I RECYCLE?
1. Aluminum & Tin cans – Clean and empty. Please rinse residue out of the cans. It is best to throw away food-contaminated items rather than put them in the recyclables. Biggest
problems are peanut butter jars and dog food cans.
2. Cardboard – Corrugated (with the ripple in the middle), cereal and cracker boxes (chip board) are accepted too. Please flatten boxes so they won’t fill up the bin.
3. Office Paper and Mixed Paper – All colors are OK except neon colors. Paper clips and staples are OK. No craft paper (because of high wood pulp content). No post–it–notes or sticky adhesives. No carbon or carbon-copy producing paper.
4. Junk mail, magazines, catalogues, phone books, paperback and hardback cover books and phone books are OK.Please open junk mail before discarding.
5. Plastics #1 and #2 – Recycle plastics with a neck or handle ONLY. Look on the bottom of the plastic container and the recycling number will be in a triangle. #1 includes soda, juice and water bottles. #2 natural & colored plastic includes milk, juice and water jugs, plus colored detergent bottles.
WHAT CAN I NOT RECYCLE? “NOT ACCEPTED”
1. NO Food Contaminated Material – This attracts bugs and smells up the bin. It is much cheaper to rinse a bottle than power-wash a bin. Left over pizza in a box is a contaminate.
2. NO Tissues, Napkins, Sanitary Wipes – We do not want anything with human waste for sanitary reasons.
3. NO Styrofoam or food-contaminated paper plates and cups.
4. NO Plastic grocery and trash bags – Plastic wrap and Plastic bags get caught in the machinery. The only exception: shredded office paper should be placed in a clear plastic bag so it will not go all over the place.
5. NO Wax milk cartons, boxes or produce boxes.
6. NO packing materials- Bubble wrap, peanuts and Styrofoam sheets are accepted at the USPO Stores where they can be reused. Styrofoam is a bad contaminant and through static electricity will clings to other materials in the recycling bin.
7. NO Glass – Target accepts Glass inside their store. They ship it to Phoenix in their backhauls. Glass is dangerous and responsible for injury to workers. Glass shards get into recycling material making it impossible to get out.
8. NO LIQUIDS – Liquids will ruin all papers and fibers. Please empty beverage containers before recycling.
If you need your outside blue bin serviced, call the SCSWA at (575) 528-3800 to place a work order.
